THIS! this is the reason I think the ending of books was so powerful – home was what kept Frodo going through all the horrible things that happened on the journey that coming back to discover that the shire has changed beyond recognition, that the enemy got that safe, firm foothold is such a crushing blow and it shows what amazing strength he has that this doesn’t break him completely.
because whether we like it or not a war doesn’t exist in a bubble – it comes home with you, physically and mentally and I’m glad the lord of the rings does such a good job showing it because it’s very easy for people to forget…
