What happened to G1 Ratchet?

You know, I’ve been wondering for a while – what happened to G1 Ratchet?

I mean in the comics & episodes I read & watched he seems sweet, a little naive, LOVES to party (maybe a little bit too much😂), very protective of his friends and willing to fight for them while insisting that “I’m a medic, not a fighter!”

So why is it that in almost any other incarnation of the character – including fanfictions of G1 Ratchet – he always seems so angry and cranky – throwing wrenches at people & swearing and insisting he can & wants to fight too???

Don’t get me wrong – I love cranky grandpa Ratchet as much as the next fan but there is something about the erasure of sweet and non-violent characters’ traits (don’t even get me started on Perceptor and Wheeljack…) that just rubs me the wrong way I guess…

Maybe the reboot will give us some of these characters back (although I don’t have much hope for that… “badass” characters just sell better I guess)

You’re all talking about how creepy he is but like, have you seen him in action he’s terror incarnate, this is just a moment where he forgot to hide it

yup, Ratchet & Arcee are definitely the most terrifying Autobots in the series (possibly two of the most terrifying cybertronians period)

he’s pretty good at hiding it most of the times though (when he isn’t busy tearing through a dozen terrorcons at a time…)

years….. go on…………. i guess……….

[image: 4 panel fancomic of Drift in different eras visualizing/remembering Ratchet.

Young Drift remembers Young Ratchet, who says “Take care!” with a soft smile on his face. Drift’s crying with his hands on his face and a bandaid on his helm “I met an angel today!”

Deadlock visualizes early-war Ratchet, who says: “Didn’t think we’d meet like this but I’m glad you’re okay.” Deadlock steams. “What the fuck is wrong with him? Like he cares.”

Drift visualizes late-war Ratchet, who says: “Good to have you on this side.” Drift smiles happily “Still too kind for his own good I see…”

mtmte era Ratchet sticks his middle finger up, radiating fury. Drift sweats in confusion, little shocked question marks floating around him.

end description]

I really love these little hand gestures Ratchet keeps making for a couple of reasons:

1. they didn’t HAVE to include them – it’s not essential to the scene, just makes it better, and I’m really thankful for the work and effort the animators put into this show.

2. they make the robots seem far more alive and human and the emotions seem so much more real.

and the personal ones:

3. I’m Jewish. and Jewish people speak with their hands. A LOT. and I’m definitely no exception…(I know not only Jews do it but c’mon, let me have this)

4. I just really love Ratchet and almost everything about him makes me unreasonably happy💞
